Discover The Witterings

Find your Zen by the Sea

I made the move from London to the South Coast in 2023 and I haven’t looked back.
Living by the sea is more then a change of location, it’s a whole new way of life.
The Witterings invites you to slow down, unwind and embrace the beauty of the coast.

Whether you’re visiting The Witterings for a holiday or calling it home, it’s an idyllic village that helps you find your peace and offers a perfect escape from the busy pace of modern life.

The Witterings is most well known for it's stunning, long sandy shoreline at West Witterings. It’s the perfect spot for sunbathing, swimming and water sports, it does get busy here so make sure to book your parking space ahead of time to secure a spot.

Towards the far side of the beach, you'll find East Head, a beautiful stretch of sandy dunes within the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s the perfect place for a relaxed stroll or to escape the crowds and find a quieter part of the beach.

Towards the East of the village lies Bracklesham Bay, a haven for surfers, paddleboarders, and windsurfers.

Whether you’re a seasoned pro or a beginner, Bracklesham offers a fantastic environment to try something new or enjoy your favourite sport. The beach is also great for a leisurely stroll along the shore, with stunning views of the coastline and plenty of space to relax and watch the action.

Did you know that seals are often spotted in The Witterings? I once had a close encounter while swimming when one popped its head up just about 3 meters away from me!

Along the coastline, you'll always be treated to stunning views of the Isle of Wight, with its picturesque cliffs and tranquil beauty just across the water.

And if you're feeling extra curious, take a little trek to Medmerry Beach. At low tide, it’s a treasure hunter’s dream! Fossils and even relics of wartime history sometimes wash ashore! Keep an eye out for old equipment and occasionally, unexploded ordnance (if you do spot any please inform the Coastguard on 999!)

My personal favourite part of the beach is walking past Medmerry Beach and heading to the Medmerry Nature Reserve, here you will step into the perfect blend of sea views and countryside! Picture peaceful ponds filled with birds, miles of scenic countryside views and an atmosphere so peaceful it feels like time slows down. It’s the perfect place to find your zen!

If you’re looking to make a day of walking or fancy a bike ride, you have to try the East Head to/from Itchenor pathway. This route takes you through rare habitats, including salt marshes, grassy wetlands, and stunning sea views. It’s a wildlife lover’s dream, with plenty of chances to spot birds and marine life along the way. Plus, the countryside views are just breathtaking!

Once you reach Itchenor or head back to West Wittering, you’ll find a selection of eateries perfect for refuelling and re-energising. Whether you’re craving a hearty meal or a refreshing drink, there’s something to satisfy every craving!

As well as the stunning views around every corner, East Witterings High Street boasts an array of independent shops, boutiques, cafes and restaurants. You can find everything you need here, whether you are looking to buy a gift, treat yourself or grab a bite to eat! The village is surrounded by farmland, so you can also pick up some fantastic local produce, from fish to veggies and artisanal goodies. It’s the perfect place to shop, eat and support local businesses while soaking up the coastal charm.

Singer Michael Ball, who grew up in The Witterings, described it as ‘heaven on earth’ in a 2015 interview with The Telegraph.

If you would like to explore beyond The Witterings, there are plenty of charming, quaint villages nearby, each with its own unique character. Take a stroll through Bosham, a picturesque waterside village steeped in history, or head to Dell Quay for stunning harbour views and a cosy pub by the water. Chichester Harbour, Itchenor, Thorney Island, and Hayling Island also offer beautiful coastal walks, sailing spots and peaceful countryside escapes.

If you’re in the mood for something a little more lively, Chichester is a 20-minute drive away, with its historic cathedral, boutique shopping and cultural attractions.

For even more excitement, Portsmouth is 40 minutes away, home to the Spinnaker Tower, Gunwharf Quays Designer Outlet, the historic dockyard and a vibrant waterfront filled with restaurants and bars.

During WWII, the Medmerry coast was part of Britain's defenses against a German invasion. Several pillboxes were built along the shoreline, some of which can still be seen today, offering a glimpse into the area's wartime history.

On clear nights, the unspoiled coastline offers the perfect backdrop for stargazing, with the sky lit up by countless stars and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it feel like you’re in another world.

Whilst there isn’t a hotel in the village, you’ll be spoilt for choice with plenty of holiday homes, unique Airbnbs and scenic caravan parks. Whether you're looking for a charming seaside cottage, a modern beachfront apartment or a family-friendly caravan stay, there’s something for everyone. You'll find the perfect spot to unwind and soak up the coastal atmosphere. Many options are just a short stroll from the beach, so you can wake up to the sound of the waves and enjoy stunning sunsets right on your doorstep!
